Basilica Cistern, Istanbul

The Basilica Cistern is a Byzantine construction in the present day Sultanahmet area of Istanbul. Before the Ottomans, it was used to supply water to the Grand Palace and its neighbourhood, and briefly used by the Ottoman sultans, before falling to disuse. It was lost over the centuries and rediscovered in the 19th century, post which it was opened to the public as a museum.
